I apologize upfront for the vagueness of the following information:

Seeking information regarding my great great grandfather Patrick I Doherty believed to be born around in 1826 in Donegal. Believed to have emigrated to the US in the 1840's. Located in Boston in 1850. Died in Boston in December 1879. Married to Margaret McGrogy (aka Rogers) with one child (Cornelius Francis Doherty). Cornelius was my great grandfather and believed to be first generation born in USA.

Patrick Married to Catherine Cleary after death of 1st wife Margaret.

Patrick's parents were Cornelius Doherty and Margaret (Maiden name not known)

It is possible that middle initial is not I.

  • Paul:

RC baptismal records for Co. Donegal are non-existent prior to 1838. Doherty is likely the most cpmmon surname in the county and is particularly common in the Inishowen Peninsula.

We don't know if Cornelius Doherty lived until 1857 when the Griffiths Valuation survey was completed and whether he was leasing land. The Griffiths shows 24 Cornelius Doherty records all up in the Inishowen Peninsula parishes.

If you have not already done so, a DNA test would be helpful. You would want an autosomal test not the Y-DNA test.

  • Roger,

Thank you for your reply. I will do the autosomal test. I have done the Y-DNA TEST.
