Good Morning!

This may be a long shot but I am trying to locate information on my Grandfather.  He was born in Ireland in approximately 1860 - 1865.  I believe he was from Waterford although that may have been his port of emmigration.  He came to the United States in the mid 1880's.  He settled in Hartford Connecticut and married Bridget Powers who also was born in Ireland in the same approximate timeframe likely 2 years younger thatn Patrick.  I beleive that she also came form Waterford.  I am hopeful to find any thing that I can on these to Grandparents of mine.  I would love to get a thread that I can follow.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland from 1858-1868 and there were nine Patrick Gorman baptismal records in Co. Waterford.

I went on Ancestry.com and searched for a Patrick Gorman in Hartford CT and located a family in the 1920 census on Brookes St. Is this your family? The oldest son listed on the census return was a 30 year old William. Was William the oldest son?

Using William as a possible name for the father of Patrick, I went back to the nine baptismal records and found one where the father was William.

Patrick Gorman baptized February 5 1850 Kill RC church in Co. Waterford father William Gorman mother Ellen Phelan No townland provided.

According to the census, Patrick came over in 1885 and Bridget came over in 1882 likely with her family.

    Let me know.

  • Thank you so much for providing this information.  You do have the right person in the US census as Patrick was definitely the father of William and they did live on Brooke Street in Hartford.  There were also sons by the name of Edward, Matthew and James (who was my father).  The years of Patrick and Bridget coming to the US are helpful as well and they make sense with what I would expect.  I have never been able to find marital recorda for them in the US but I would estimate it to be in about 1888.

The one thing that does not make sense to me is the baptismal date of 1850.  I do not believe that Patrick was that old.  My info puts his birth in the early 1860's.

Do you have any recommendations for how I can try to research further?  It is possible that his place of birth was not in Waterford.  I will be tgrying to find information on Bridget Powers as well.

    Thank you again!

I made an error when transcribing the baptismal record. The year was 1860.  Sorry!

    Roger,

Thank you for your help with this.  The 1860 year makes more sense.  This will give me something to go by.

Is there any possibility that you can find anything on Bridget Powers.  Again I believe that she waws born in the 1863-1865 range.

    Thanks Again,

    Jim
