I am descended from Patrick J. McKenna, born about 1852 in Ireland. He was a machinist who worked in shipyards on the Clyde, in Scotland. Then in the late 1860s he went to Newark, New Jersey, USA and stayed there the rest of his life.
In 1876 in Newark he married Mary E. McGrath, who was also born somewhere in Ireland. They had a son, John Joseph, and a daughter, Mary Rose, and at least one more child. The family stayed in Newark for many generations.
According to U.S. census reports, he probably came to Newark in 1866 or 1868, but I have been unable to determine on what ship or from where exactly. There are so many Patrick McKennas! If anyone can help me narrow it down I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Erika,
Do you know much about Patrick's emigration to Scotland and then America? Dates, the reason why he left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool), this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. You could try checking for this information here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/immigrants.htm http://www.proni.gov.uk/ and http://www.castlegarden.org/
You could try checking Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to any land the family may have owned (as it usually passed on to a relation). Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
I wish you the best of luck with your search.
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.
Kind regards,

Hi Brendan,
I have a Patrick and a John McKenna that lived in Elizabeth NJ and worked at the Singer Sewing Machine factory in Elizabeth. this is in the first decade of the 1900s. Haven't found either of them on a census. John McKenna was a cousin of a McKenna on my tree - shown on her shipping record as going to her cousin John McKenna.
would love to find where they fit in,
cheers,
Karen.

Hi Karen,
I thought I was answering a question in the same thread above, you are talking about a different McKenna family
Have you year and birthplace records for your McKenna's, did they marry?

Hi Brendan,
I think they must be a different family - I just saw the name Patrick and knew I had him "hanging" around - don't really know any details except him & John are in directories listed as living in Pine Street, Elizabeth NJ.
thought it was worth a shot asking about him,
cheers,
karen.
