I am trying to trace my great great grandfather, Peter Masterton/Masterson O'Brien probalbly born in Leitrim 1840/41(Parish not known). Could Masterton or Masterson be his mother's maiden name?
Facts I know:- In 1875 he married Maria Barnes McKiernan in Hobart Tasmania . His age was given as 34.
He died in 1911 in Hobart. His death certificate gives his age as 65, but the death notice and funeral details give his age as 71.
His death certificate states he had been resident in the Commonwealth (Australia) for 50 years, ie arrived in Aus. about 1860/61.
I have not been able to find out any detais of his birth or immigration.

Pam:
A number of Co. Leitrim RC parishes have baptismal records starting after 1841.
I did search the subscription site Roots Ireland for both Peter O'Brien and Peter Masterson in Co. Leitrim and in both cases the earliest baptismal records were in the 1850s.
Have you considered DNA testing?
