  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Do you have any more information that you can share? The more you share the more likely it is that someone will recognise the people you are researching and be able to help or advise you.

Have you tried looking at church records for information on the family? Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Kilkenny city parishes, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showlikerecords&CityCounty=Kilkenny&CityCounty=Kilkenny&parish=Kilkenny

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

Have you tried looking in the 1901/1911 census records to see if there were any Noonans still in the area at the time? http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Some other website that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    Genealogy links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/kilkenny/index.html

    Familysearch: www.familysearch.org

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  •  My great, great grandfather was Peter Noonan who married Ann Crook, his parents were Pierce and Nancy, Pierce born about 1811 in Kilkenny.  Two sons Geoge and Thomas emigrated here to New Zealand in 1863.

  • Hi,

Many belated thanks for the information and suggestions.

I'm afraid I have very little more information, most of which has been gathered at the Liverpool end.

    The sources I have are:

The Register of Marriages for St Oswald's Church at Old Swan in Liverpool - this has an entry for Peter Noonan's marriage (his second) to Jane Rowe in 1850 and gives his parents as Pierce Noonan and Nancy Doolan (I think) of Kilkenny. I have been unable to track down his first marriage to Ann Crook but the 1841 Census indicates that she was born in Lancashire, not Ireland.

Transcripts of Church Baptism Records from St Canice's in Kilkenny via rootsireland.ie - entries for Pierce Noonan (b. 16-May-1804) and Elenor Noonan (04-Nov-1807). These both give the father as Pierce Noonan and mothers' names which might be interpreted as Nancy Doolan.

I have had a look at microfilm of St Canice's records for the period but was unable to find either baptismal record.

Any more thoughts would be appreciated but in the meantime I will up your suggestions.

    Regards,

    Roger
