Would like advice on traveling to Athlone from the USA. Some of my family roots are in Athlone (Cunningham, Brennan, Owens) - St. Peter's parish / Drum. Is there anyplace in Athlone to do any research? The best way to Athlone? Can you rent a car in Athlone? Many bed and breakfast to choose from? And what time of the year would you recommend to visit? Thanks!!! Stan Owens

Dear Stan:
Thank you for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site. The Old Athlone Society which is a local history group has a very good website with some great links that you might find useful in planning your upcoming trip. https://athlonehistory.ie/web-links/
In addition, the Athlone public library also contains a local history area where you may be able to research information on your family. The website link is: http://www.westmeathcoco.ie/en/ourservices/library/findyourlibrary/athlonelibrary/
As to places to stay, there are a number of hotels, Bed & Breakfasts and self-catering places in the area. Athlone is a large town with a lot of different facilities including an Institute of Technology, a shopping centre and the Shannon River port. You can view accommodation choices through Booking.com, Trip Advisor and Expedia.
If you are planning a trip to Athlone, the Spring,Summer and Fall would be nice due to its location on the Shannon River. I will copy this post to several volunteers in the West Meath area who might be able to offer further advice. Please keep us posted on your travel plans.
Kind regards,
Jane
