Hello

I have found an article about this ancestor. It states he was a quartermaster in the 1st battalion rifles royal Irish. In 1893 he was court marshalled and held in barracks at Newry. I wonder if anyone could find any additional info please. He was born in Tipperary

  • The Star 8th Nov 1884:

“The Royal Irish Rifles – Quartermaster Sergeant Patrick Joseph Thorpe to be Quartermaster vice L. Duffy, superseded for absence without leave”.

Newry Telegraph of 18.11.1893 and 14.12.1893 comment on the court martial and mention his journey home to his wife in Hounslow. The newspapers are very sympathetic to his plight.

Westmeath Guardian 4.12.1891 has a long article on his career, changes he made to soldiers food and his interest in cycling, amongst things.
