1855 NY Census.png (389.18 KB)

Hi,

I've found two Griffith's Valuation documents and I don't know how to figure them out.  I believe the Mary Ward in them is my gg aunt.  In two instances she is living near or with Thomas Bushe and his family.  I believe she is my gg grandmother's sister.  One of her sister's was married to Thomas Bushe, Ellen McDonnell.  I believe that Mary Ward was also born a McDonnell.  In the 1855 Census she is living with my gg grandparents in NYC, along with two of Thomas and Ellen Bushe's children, Ellen and John.  She is listed as sister.  I believe my gg grandmother gave the census information so Mary would be her sister and Ellen and John her niece and nephew.

Can anyone help me figure out is Mary Ward was born Mary McDonnell?  Is she living with or near Thomas Bushe and his family?

  • Hi Rachel:

Thank you for your post.  I'm unable to open the Ancestry links that you have sent.  This is probably because it is a subscription site and is firewalled so that everyone can gain access to it.

I have looked at Griffith's through the website AskAboutIreland.  I see a Mary Ward who is residing at Entry no. 23 (a) and Entry 24 (a) in Baltimore, Co Cork.  Is this the Mary Ward that you are referring to?  If so, as she is listed, she is most likely a widow.

The Cork Griffith's Valuation was published in 1864, so it would seem strange that Mary would be living in New York in 1855 and back in Baltimore in 1864.

If you would send me an email at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com, I'll be happy to try to figure this out with you.

    I look forward to hearing.
