Hi

I'm searching for information on my ancestors.
George Rafferty was born 12 May 1833 in Rossmore. His parents were Daniel Rafferty born about 1806 in Tyrone and Isabella McGuigan born 15 March 1805 in Drumglass.

Thank you in advance.

Anthony

  • Anthony,

Griffiths Valuation (1860) lists one Rafferty property in Ross More. That was Michael Rafferty who had plot 15 which was a 6 acre farm. (Today in the V between the Carland Rd and the Rossmore Rd).

The Valuation revision records show that farm staying in Michael’s name till 1876 when it changes to George Rafferty. In turn that changes to Robert Mclean in 1892. There’s a possible death for Michael Rafferty in 1872 aged 58. It’s not free to view so you would need to pay to view it on the GRONI site to establish if it’s the same Michael. I don't know what happened to George around 1892 when he stops being the tenant of the farm.

For births and marriages prior to 1864 you need to search the local church records. I assume the family were RC. The parish records (RC parish of Drumgath) start in 1821. The RC parish records are on-line free on the National Library site:

No Rafferty farm in Ross More in the tithe applotment records for 1832. So it looks as though they acquired the farm after that year.

There were a couple of Raffertys in Ross More in the 1901 census but it’s not immediately clear whether they are related to your family.

Hi Jean, hope you are well. Yes I have Arthur on my tree, he lived in Rutherglen? Do you know much about the family?

    Best wishes
