I am a descendant of James Rall of Westmeath b 1815.  I believe his parents were Thomas Rall and Catherine Burns.  This is all I know about him and am interested in any information that might be available on him and his parents.

Grateful for any assistance,

Evelyn Sweeney Naranjo

  • Hello Evelyn and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out

Evelyn firstly have you done your DNA as this might narrow down the area in Ireland your family come from

The name Rall seems to be mostly found in Cavan, Westmeath, Meath and maybe few in Longford

There is one record of a James Rall arriving in New York 1834 age 19years, could this be your James.

So does this mean he married in USA

Have you found any records of James in USA

    Will keep looking

  • Geraldine, thank you so much for the info you provided me on my gr-grandfather, James Rall.  I have had a very difficult time finding anything on him.  This search has been going on for decades.  I had been unable to find anything on Rall in Westmeath and only learned he was from there when he was married to his second wife in NY.  He very well could have been married the first time in NYC also.  Unfortunately, I so far am unable to find the name of the first wife, who would be the one I am descended from.  I even began to think the name Rall didn't exist in Ireland so I appreciate the info you shared.  I have had my DNA done.  I also have mtDNA from a cousin who would carry the mtDNA of James' first wife.  But I don't know what to do with it to determine help on the Rall line.  I appreciate anything else you might find on James Rall.

  • No problem Evie delighted to be able to help in any way we can

Firstly, you need to upload your DNA to  Gedmatch - https://www.gedmatch.com/ - if you have not already done so, there are lots of tutorials on YouTube if this is of any help if not come back to me and I will do up insturctions for you - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BcwsSv1eVU

When you have uploaded your DNA to Gedmatch you will get a 'Kit Number' - then you can run the kit number on Gedmatch and you will get DNA matches.

There are also lots of DNA groups on Facebook that you can join, give your kit number and see if you match anyone in that particular group e.g. Westmeath group.

    County Westmeath Gedmatch DNA Comparisons

But firstly get the DNA uploaded to Gedmatch and get the Kit number and we can then help you with going through the rest.

I will be back to you soon

  • Found this from Cavan Census of 1821 and there is a James Rhall age 6 (which would tie in with Date of Birth of 1815 that you have)
