Dear friends,Greetings from a fellow admin, (Tralee, Co. Kerry) I am looking for a family, father Archibald Ruane born in Scotland. His son Andrew Ruane is reputed to have been born in Gransha in 1710. I would be very grateful for any suggestions you might have about old land records etc. There is a lot of misinformation online about this family so there is a possibility that the Gransha/Greenshaw is not in Co. Antrim at all.

Many thanks

Martine

  • Not sure I can help all that much, but I thought I would mention something which you may already know, which is that Ruane is an East Galway surname, also found in East Mayo (there have been some marriages in my family with Ruane's there).

There appear to be 18 Irish townlands or subtownlands with "Gransha" in the anglicized versions of their names, almost all of them in Ulster (see  https://www.townlands.ie/search/?q=gransha), but the only one in Antrim seems to be the one you've already located in Island Magee.  However, if you look for townlands with Grange in their anglicized form, the Irish original of which is usually An Ghráinseach, there are about a dozen of those in Galwayhttps://www.townlands.ie/galway/

  • Thanks a million Kevin. I have been trawling through the historical newspapers with no success. The family in the States (to whom I may be related) all have Archibald as deceased in 1751 and a landowner, but this may be a fabrication as there is no mention of his death in Irish newspapers. And we would expect a newspaper mention for a landowner. rootsireland doesn't appear to have a record for him either. I'm beginning to wonder was he one of the Irish who went to the Caribbean... that might explain the wealth of his children in the Americas. But thanks again for getting back to me.
