Needing some help to find information on my great great grandfather Redmond Hanlon.  He was born in Ireland and emmigrated to Australia where he married, had a family and is buried.

According to the transcript on his headstone he was a native of Co Carlow.

The information on the register of his death was that he was in Queensland Australia for 30 years and that he was born in Tipperary Ireland. It didn't have the names of his parents on the record. He died in 1896 and was 56 at the time of his death.

He would have been around 26 maybe when he came to Australia, or could have come before that and was in another state. The record mentions 30 years in Queensland so its possible he could have been here earlier.

He was married in Queensland on 3 November 1867. He married Ellen Hogan and she emmigrated to Australia from Ireland as well. Her parents were John Hogan and Catherine Martain. I have found her baptism record in the parish records. She was baptised 1 March 1841 in Tipperary, Monsea Ireland.

I have Ellen Hogan on a passenger list but I'm not sure if its the correct person. The ship was Lady Milton and the arrival date to Australia was 28 June 1862. The origin location was Newmarket, County Tipperary Ireland.

If there is any information on John Hogan and Catherine Martain as well I would much appreciate that as well.

Thankyou for any help

Lesa

The subscription site Roots Ireland has a March 25 1841 baptismal record for a Redmond Hanlon in the Leighlinbride RC parish in Co. Carlow with father Daniel Hanlon and mother Bridget MacDonald. There were no Co. Tipperary baptismal records for a Redmond Hanlon around 1840.

  • Hi Lesa,
You say you have the record for Ellen's Baptism....can you send the link please.
This is March 1841 and I cannot see her.
02481/01, Monsea - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI
From the Tithe records looks like the Hogans lived in Bellum, which is a townland in the Parish of Monsea.
The Martin's also lived in that area.

    Also, you say..........
The origin location was Newmarket, County Tipperary Ireland.
Can you send that document please.  I don't know of a Newmarket in Tipperary. There are a couple in other counties.

This is from a ship list..............is this your Ellen Hogan?

HOGAN Ellen 1862 19 Clonoulty xx Left from Ballycummins xx Paid for by Martin Maher . Ship = Lady Milton

Hi Margo as for the Newmarket thing I just read that on the New South Wales Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists Record Index

I don't know if it is indeed my Ellen Hogan but the dates and her age at the time all add up.

  • Thank you, I see it now.
Where the sponsors are named........the last word in Bellum.
    That is were they lived.
Note the male sponsor was William Maher same surname as the Martin Maher on the ship record.

  • Yes I see that I also have ancestors named Maher on the other side of my family

Is there anything you can find on Catherine Martain and John Hogan like maybe a marriage record?

I have put Daniel Hanlon and Bridget McDonald in my ancestry tree as the parents of Redmond , so lets see if I get any hints

Thanks so much for your help

  • There is a Matth Martin in Monsea in 1825.

The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)
There are other Martin's in the area of Kilbarron.

1848 and 1850 there is a John Martin in Monsea.  Townland of Tullamore.
    Griffith's Valuation (askaboutireland.ie)

Are you in Ancestry or Find my Past?
Spell Martain as martin and see if you get more info.
I have had a look around for BDM in the area and next place Martin names show is in a place called Grange.
Let me know if you get a hint for Redmond.

  • Hi Margot, I have and update. This information changes things!!

I have obtained the marriage certificate of Redmond and Ellen , so have more accurate information. It states that the parents of Redmond are Redmond Hanlon (farmer) and Mary Byrne. The  birth place was (writing very hard to read) Ballion Killou?? Carlow Ireland.

Information for Ellen states her father John Hogan was a farmer and her mother was Margaret Levehan? Leueham?or could be Lenehan? The informant on the death register was the grandson of Ellen so looks like he got it wrong when he said her mother was Catherine Martin.

Martin Maher was the sponsor for Ellen to come to Australia. At the time of marriage 3 November 1867 ages at their last birthday were Redmond 28 and Ellen 26. Their place of residence was Cressbrook and occupations were Raymond a labourer and Ellen a servant. Maybe Martin Maher had a property or station and they were both working there. I'm still looking in to that.

I'm hoping this information may help in finding something concrete in Ireland

    Many thanks

    Lesa

  • Hi Lesa,
Can you email please, see below..................with the documents you have.
There are two John Hogan's in Lorrha in Griffiths valuation, one in the townland of Redwood and the other in the townland Curraghglass.
These townlands are next to each other so it may only be one John Hogan, this is 1852.
Do you know of any siblings?
    Thanks
