Dear all.

I would be grateful for your advice, expertise and guidance. My Great-grandfather, Robert Sheridan was born 16th January 1859 in Dublin to Charles Sheridan and married Anne Gaffney on 5 July 1892 at the Catholic Chapel of Cavan, Ireland, by which time his father (Charles Sheridan) is shown on the marriage certificate as deceased. Robert died on 16th August 1926.

My request is in connection with Charles Sheridan. I have no other details about him other than the belief that he married twice (though this may simply be untrue). The first marriage is to Elizabeth Donohoe on 17 February 1849 in the Catholic Chapel of Cavan, Ireland - from which comes the birth of Robert Sheridan above. The second marriage is to Ellen Kelly, from which two further children are born, Mary (29th December 1864) and John (18th April 1869). I would have anticipated further children for Charles and Elizabeth given their marriage in 1849 and it being 10 years before Robert is born

I have looked on the civil registration for death of Charles Sheridan with the date range of 1859 - 1892 and have found the following:

Charles Sheridan

18th August 1893 - his widow/person reporting the death being Ellen Sheridan (unfortunately this is later than the marriage of Robert where Charles is shown as deceased)

11th January 1886 - person reporting John Sheridan, son

21st January 1885 - person reporting Margaret Sheridan, daughter

9th April 1874 - person reporting James McCall

30th April 1879 - person reporting Norah Patterson

16th December 1873 - person reporting Edward Sheridan

There are a few returns which I am unable to find the details of.

I'm trying to find any details about Charles and his children (and if the marriage details are correct).  It does appear that there is a connection between Dublin (where Robert is Born) and Cavan (where Robert marries and dies)

Many thanks,

Bernard

    Two points for your consideration.

First, the handwriting on the civil marriage record for Robert Sheridan and Anne Gaffney is not very legible and I believe that the annotation for Charles is showing alive. This would then point to the 1893 death record that you located with Ellen Sheridan as the informant.

Second, you list Robert as born in 1859 in Dublin. From the record I located on the subscription site Roots Ireland, Robert was baptized in January 16 1854. This would match up more with the age 37 that Robert showed on his marriage record in 1892 and the age 45 shown in the 1901 census.

Let me know if you hav any questions.

  • Bernard,

I agree with Roger that 'alive' is the correct term.
