My father was Robert  John Bonaird and was born (according to his naval records) in the parish of Faughboyne in the county of Donegal  I am trying to get a copy of his birth certificate but I do not know my grandparents names. They died before I was born and my parents where married here in South Africa.I know that my father never returned to Ireland after I was born. How do I go about obtaining my grandparents names.

  • You need to get a copy of your father’s marriage and death certificates. Hopefully they will give you his parents names. His approximate year of birth would be helpful too.

The name of the parish he came from is probably Taughboyne (not Faughboyne).

If you get the parents names, post that information here, and we'll see if we can trace the family.

  • Could this possibly be the Robert you are looking for??  Robert Bovaird 1882 - not Bonaird.

    The parish/address looks correct.

  • This Robert died age 1 in 1883 and another child was born in 1886 to the same parents, who was also named Robert. Perhaps this is him.

The baptism record for 1886 birth shows that the Parish/District is Taughboyne and religion is Church of Ireland.

    See what you think.
