IS ANYONE RESEARCHING THE MCALLISTER FAMILY OF DUBLIN??

I am researching my great great grandfather Daniel McAllister who married Julia Crow in January 1839 at St Andrews RC Church Dublin.  They had 3 sons, John baptised 1839 (born LUSK??), William baptised 1841, Daniel baptised 1843. ALL 3 SONS WERE BAPTISED IN ST ANDREWS RC DUBLIN.

William is my great grandfather who joined the British Army in 1860 (2nd Battalion, 14th Reg of Foot - I have his pay muster sheets. He is listed as a Tailor by trade. William served in the New Zealand Land Wars from 1861 to 1867 when the  regiment returned to Victoria, Aust.  William settled in Australia.

John McAllister (is possibily my ancestor?? not absolutely sure) I have found reference to John born 1839  Dublin but it says LUSK on Chelsea Pension record..  This may be the case and perhaps he was born in Lusk and then baptised in St Andrews?? Dublin.  On researching John, I discovered he is listed as a Chelsea Pensioner who served in 3regt. Lt Dragoons, enlisted 1858 in British Army. I have found those pensioner records via FINDMYPAST.IE, but would like his actual SERVICE RECORDS to see if his parents were in fact Daniel and Julia McAllister as the Chelsea Pension records do not mention the name of his parents.

My McAllister ancestors  appear to have been TAILORS in Dublin,  However, John McAllister bapt 1839 St Andrews and born LUSK?? is listed on the Chelsea Pensioner record as being a BLACKSMITH by trade.

I would be most grateful for any help with my research for my McAllister ancestors.

I will be coming to Ireland around Aug/Sept this year 2013 to hopefully walk in my ancestors footsteps.

Regards to all in Irealand, Maria Mercer, Brisbane Australia.

    Hello Maria,

    Thanks for your message,

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp  or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

The Tithe Applotment List might be of use to you, or at least interesting for you. These lists constitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burden of the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive. The information in the Tithes is quite basic, typically consisting of townland name, landholder's name, area of land and tithes payable. Many Books also record the landlord's name and an assessment of the economic productivity of the land. The tax payable was based on the average price of wheat and oats over the seven years up to 1823, and was levied at a different rate depending on the quality of land. For Parishes where the registers do not begin until after 1850, this information can be useful, as they are often the only surviving early records. They can provide valuable circumstantial evidence, especially where a holding passed from father to son in the period between the Tithe survey and Griffith's Valuation.

Trade directories from the time might provide the addresses, from which the McAllister tailors plied their trade.

  • Hi Maria

My name is Ann Kennedy & I'm from New Zealand, my Mother was Patricia McAllister- daughter of Cyril- son of Archibald-son of John (born about 1838) a wheel wright & blacksmith by trade who I first found record of in an 1862 electoral roll for the Gabriels Gully gold mine in the South Island.

This is a link to information I have found about him & our family, not sure if we are related but could well be, as I'm not sure how or when this John arrived in New Zealand.

hope to hear from you if you think there could be a connection, we're not sure if we are of Irish or Scottish descent but would love to be able to track him further.

    Regards
