  • Hi Sally

For local volunteer help for Dublin ancestors, please join our IrelandXO Dublin community where you can create an ancestor profile for Richard to increase your chances of discovery.

Richard Bell (1816-1876) was a shoemaker, but his death record does not give his home address. Do you have any more information on him?

  • Based on births and baptisms of children, Richard married a Mary Cummins sometime before 1851. Their children (abt. 6) were baptised in St. Nicholas RC (Francis Street), youngest that I found was a William baptised 1865 born in the Coombe hospital, father's occupation shoemaker, mother Mary Cummins.

Various residences are listed on the births and baptisms - Longford Street (1868), Upr. Kevin Street (1865), Golden Lane (1854), Wood Street (1856) and Patrick Street (1862). I found no mention of Richard in trade directories or at any of these addresses, most seem to be 'shared', e.g. tenements.

I found no sign of a marriage for Richard and Mary, they possibly married outside the city..

  • Thank you for helping me,I have been searching for many years with little results.

Have found most of the childrens births records but have nothing for the parents

    Catherine & Mary b 1848 (did not survive), John 1851, Bridget 1852, Thomas 1854, Alice 1856, Richard 1859, Mary 1873, Katherine1874

Two boys died young within weeks of each other of diptheria

Katherine is in the 1901 census but it was registered at the hospital where she was a nurse, so it gave no other family members

Alice married William McDonald and came to Perth Western Australia, as did Mary & Katherine

Richard jnr went to America,  Mary had very young children when her husband passed, I can image the struggle if they were living in tenements

moving constantly as each birth suggests, my biggest regret I don`t know what happened to her

It has been suggested that Mary was a twin to Alice Cummins, from Clonmel Tipperary

Thanks for listening to my story, what I have now will probably give my next generation the sense of  their ancestors lives

(Is it possible to decipher the cause of Richard Bell`s death ?)

    Thank You
