I am looking for family history of Richard Fitzgerald 1825 - 16.08.1881 who is my 3rd Great Grandfather.

Richard was married to Ellen Kent 1834 - 1907, they came to Australia 03.11.1854 aboard the ship Patrican.

There Son William Patrick Fitzgerald is my 2nd Great Grandfather and is where my Australian Irish heritage is.

Richards parish in Australian records is listed as Kilbenny, Diocese Cashel and Emly.

In particular I am after any information about Richard Fitzgerald and his life and family in Ireland.

Any information about his Male line going back would be a bonus.

Thank You.

  • The subscription site Roots Ireland has a February 28 1854 marriage between Richard Fitzgerald and Ellen Kent. The RC church was Kilbehenny and Anglesborough.

There are no Richard Fitzgerald baptismal records in Kilbehenny around 1825, There is a March 20 1825 baptismal record in the parish of Galbally and Aherlow. This parish is just to the north of Kilbehenny. The parents were John Fitzgerald and Mary Piggott. Possibly this is the record for your ancestor.

I looked for baptismal records for children of Richard Fitzgerald and Ellen Kent. Roots Ireland had a February 21 1853 baptismal record for a William Fitzgerald in Kilbehenny. So it would appear that William was born a year before his parents married.

I located three different Ellen Kent baptismal records all before 1834. There were no Ellen Kent records in 1834

Ellen Kent  June 16 1826 father William Kent mother Anne McNamara Kilbehenny

Ellen Kent  January 28 1827 father Thomas Kent mother Margaret Fitzgerald Kilbehenny

Ellen Kent June 19 1831 .father Edmund Kent mother Mary Gorman.Galbally

Which one is correct? Likely one of the two in Kilbehenny since the marriage was in that parish and marriages occurred in Kilbehenny.

  • Hi,

I looked on Ancestry at the Patrican's passengers' list from 1854 which included Richard, Ellen, and William. Richard's parents were William and Mary and his mother lived in Mitchelstown, Cork. Richard was a farm laborer so might have traveled to Kilbeheeny, Limerick where he met Ellen and where William was born.

    Per RootsIreland, paid subscription.

There was a Richard Fitzgerald born in Mitchelstown August 1, 1825, to William Fitzgerald and Mary Lynne. He had the following siblings- Bridget 1817, Abigail 1819, Mary 1828, Matthew 1830, and Margaret 1833. The first two siblings identify Desilahane/ Drislahane, Mitchelstown. I have not found this location.

On the ship's record Ellen's parents were Thomas and Margaret. There was a parish identified but I could not read. I assume she is the Ellen, Roger identified, baptized in 1827 to Thomas Kent (farmer) and Margaret Fitzgerald in Gerragh Mt., Kilbeheeny, Limerick. If I identified the right Ellen, her siblings were Margaret 1829 and Thomas 1832.

Maybe, Ellen's mother Margaret Fitzgerald was related to the Mitchelstown Fitzgeralds.

    Regards- Mary
