I am hoping the attached will help researchers.  I have not been able to decipher all of the verbage but will include what I am able to understand.

the letterhead is from the Dalgin, Millbrook, Tuam

first word?  Richard Joice I have known from his childhood he has been also for a long time in my employment as assitant groom and I have no hesitation in stating that a better competent? young man could not be had in every respect.

signature:   first names??? Birmingham (followed by intials adn another signature

19 North (something?) another word we cannot undertand and finishes with the dated May 16, 1872.

We know he settled in North Tarrytown, Westchester Co., NY, USA, married Mary Ann Shean (or Sheehan) , whose parents were from Irealnd, in January 11,1883 at St. Teresa's Parish and they raised a large family.  My grandfather being the youngest.  The only other information we have is that Richard was born about 1849.

I realize there were and still are a tremendous number of Joyce's in the area and that Richard was a common name.  Any help you can give would be a blessing.

Eileen Murphy

  • Mr. Ryan,

I have found some background information on the estate which was owned by decendants of John Birmingham and divided in 1802 by his sons Michael (Dalgin) and Edward (Millbrook).  I was hoping to find some estate records which might give reference to the family.  I just do not know where to begin in that arena for the time 1849-1872.  Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated.

    regards,

  • hi,

The Calenders of Wills and Administration 1858-1922 are now on line.

If there is an entry you might be able to get a copy of the Will from Dublin - I think a lot of these records were destroyed unfortunately.

  • Hi Eileen.

Just had a search of the 1901 census of Dunmore and actually there are only three Joyce families living in that area at that time .

1  Thomas Joyce aged 60 and family in townland of Carrowmanagh.

2 Bridget Joyce aged 52 and family in townland of Lisduff.

3 James Joyce aged 39 and family also in townland of Lisduff .

The first two are general same age group as your Richard but obviously Bridget is widow of an unnamed Joyce male.

All three had large families as census record shows.
