My great-grandmother was Catherine Whelen, b. 1859 (bapt. July 24, 1859), daughter of Richard Whelan and Anne Joyce of Castlebar St., Westport. She emmigrated to the US in 1875. I am trying to find out what happened to her siblings. Through research in R.C Parish Baptismal Registers, Civil Records of Births, Deaths, & Marriages, etc., I have identified the following potential children of Richard and Anne (Joyce) Whelan:

John Joseph, b. 1852, emigrated to US in 1872

Richard, 1856, identified as pubican in Westport in 1880s, no death record

Bridget 1858, died 1885 in Westport

Catherine, 1859 - my great grandmother emigrated to US in 1875

Thomas, 1861, d. 1866 in Westport

Ellen, 1861

Patrick 1864

Sarah 1866

Mary Jane 1867

Anne 1867, married July 23, 1882 to Thomas Quinn, age 26, policeman of Shop street, son of Thomas Quinn (dead) farmer

Emily 1869, died 1871 in Westport

Elizabeth 1871, died at birth

If these are correct, I would love to find out what happened to Richard Jr., Ellen, Patrick, Sarah, Mary Jane, and Anne Quinn.

I know that the mother, Anne Joyce, died in 1871 in Westport at the age of 39, but I do not know when or where the father, Richard Whelan died.

The Valuation of 1851/55/57 placed Richard Whelan, Millwright/Miller/Shopkeeper at 29/30 Castlebar St., Westport. As I live in the US, I don't have access to the Cancelled Books at Dubin's Valuation Office to trace any updates from the 1850s valuations. Birth records, marrige records, court records etc. continue to place Richard Whelan on Castlebar St. through the 1870s. By the 1901 Census, there were no Whelans at the Castlebar St., address.

I would love to know more about this family. Thanks for any help you can give!

Mary

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The only death or marriage civil record I can locate for a Whelan is the 1882 marriage reocrd that you already have. My guess is that the family emigrated except for Anne.

I was able to track down Thomas Quinn and Anne in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. See below. You should be able to find their death records.

Feel free to add your ancestor stories to our XO Chronicles site https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

  • Thanks so much for these links to the 1901 and 1911 census listings for Thomas and Anne Quinn! I will check death records in that town. I really appreciate your reply, and I will add an ancestor story for my great grandmother, Catherine Whelan Nolan, once I have one put together.

Great resource! Thanks again for your help.
