  • I can see 18 marriages in Ireland involving women named Eliza(beth) Richardson in the period 1850 -1865. None married a Booth though.

  • Thank you Elwyn. These are ver common names. My grandfather, James Henry Booth, was born 23 May 1861 "on the high seas." He claimed that his mother's name was Elizabeth and she was from Ireland. I found that a lot of Richardsons and Booths in the South Shore area of Nova Scotia were from County Tyrone. I recently learned (from my 4th DNA testing company) that I descend from the marriage of William Booth and Mary Richardson in Chester, Nova Scotia (1831). I'm hoping to trace Mary and/or William back to Ireland. Incidentally, my father was born in Westport, Mayo.

  • Randy,

I looked at Booth marriages in Tyrone 1856 – 1861. There were 4, Robert Booth married Jane Gordon 23.1.1859 regd Cookstown; John Booth married Mary Young 2.6.1860 regd Omagh; Robert Booth married Anne Law 11.6.1861 regd Omagh & Robert Booth married Mary Harper 17.5.1859. There were about 6 Booth = Elizabeth marriages in that same window, but they were all in other parts of Ireland, notably Ballymena, Co Antrim.

What denomination was the Booth family? (The 1901 census of Tyrone has 82 people named Booth(e). The majority were Church of Ireland and Presbyterian with a few Methodists, Catholics and 2 Brethren).

Statutory birth registration (vital records) didn’t start in Ireland till 1864 so to find Joseph and Hezekiah’s births you’d need to know where they were baptised. Unless they were RC, the records are probably not on-line. Copies of the surviving records are held in PRONI  in Belfast. But unless you can narrow the search by denomination and geographic area, that’s a lot of records to go through.

I searched the 1901 Irish census for a Hezekiah Booth (on the basis that families often repeat names in later generations) but there wasn’t one anywhere in Ireland. 18 Josephs. (There were only 4 people named Hezekiah in Ireland in 1901. 1 from Co Down, 1 from Lancashire, 1 from Dublin and 1 from Donegal. 3 Church of Ireland and 1 Methodist).
