Robert b 5 Nov 1817 Co Down left Ireland (no date) and lived in Ontario Canada. HIs wife is recorded as Margaret Graham with b 24 May 1817 Co Down.

On Find a Grave his death in Smith Falls, Ontario is recorded as 14 Oct 1901 b 5 Nov 1817 Carryduff.

Any help with establishing family of Robert and also Margaret in Co Down would be very helpful.

Thanks

  • For births in the early 1800s you need to rely on church records. Carryduff is in the parish of Drumbo. You haven’t said what denomination the family was but if Church of Ireland (ie Anglican) their records start in 1791 & Presbyterian (Drumbo Presbyterian church) in 1699. There are no RC records for that period.

Neither the Church of Ireland nor Presbyterian records are on-line. There are copies in PRONI in Belfast. A personal visit is required to view them.

Graham is a very common name in Co. Down. There are several hundred on this site including about 20 Margarets:

Both Carnduff and Cairnduff are found in Ireland. It’s not very common but there are a couple of hundred around Belfast in the 1901 census, mostly Presbyterian or Church of Ireland.

  • Thank you very much Elwyn. I realise the information I provided was a little limited.

The family were Presbytarian.  I'll investigate the options you suggested.

    Thank you

    Hi Aotearoa

I am from Carryduff originally, and had  3 Cairnduff families living close to where I lived, all siblings I believe, from same farming family. My brothers delivered their newspapers. They lived on Old Saintfield Road (John Cairnduff), and Knockbracken Road South. I'm pretty sure they are all passed now, I've been living in Canada for almost 30 yrs, but live on the Old Saintfield Road until 1991. My parents lived there until 2016, sadly they have both passed now.

We had Grahams also living on the same road, but not sure if they are still there.
    Hope this helps,

    ND

  • Hello

Coincidentally I was just now looking at a book titled “Discourses Of The Doctrines Of Election” that I found 18 years ago in a house I bought near Smiths Falls Ontario. The book has a hand written inscription on both the front inside cover and on the back inside cover. It says “Presented to Robert Carnduff by a friend in Clantinacally, his birth place Ireland on the 15th of July 1869”. I googled his name and saw your post ! Incredible coincidence!
