Hello from New Zealand
I am enjoying finding my way around your website.
I have a question regarding small towns.
On some of our family history records it mentions the town of Ballynyal in Westmeath.
I have researched that town and it appears to be non-existant.
I was wondering which is probable that a typing error in translation or the original writing was hard to read.
My GG Grandparents were married in Parish of Leny in 1849 in County Westmeath and this town must be close to that parish.
They also had 3 sons that were registered in that parish too.
If you could help me with this would be really great.

Hi Noeline,
Here's the marriage record from www.rootsireland.ie/ which has another parish name for you:
Date of Marriage:11-Oct-1849
Parish / District:PORTNASHANGAN
County:Co. Westmeath
Husband
WifeName:RobertDagg
LucindaWilsonThere is annoyingly little info on the record; marriages usually took place in the bride's home parish.
No luck in the Irish Census of 1841 in which there are Westmenath records - no mention of either surname! Westmeath does not appear in the 1851.
Better luck in Griffiths Valuation (free at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/) which has 3 Robert Daggs in Westmeath in 1854 in Lackan (Townland Leny , Parish Lackan) Leny (Place Name, Parish & Townland all Leny) and Partnashangan (Parish Portnashangan, Townland & Place Name Ballynagal)

Previous topic on the same couple - Robert Dagg/Lucinda Wilson
The marriage is included in civil records so should include father's names, residences for the bride and groom etc.
Portnashanagh is the name of a Church of Ireland Parish in Co. Westmeath, located near Lough Owel on the road between Mullingar and Bunbrosna. Leny is a seperate parish adjacent to Portnashanagh to the North West.
p.s. the Church of Ireland Church for the Parish union of Portlemon and Portshangan was located in Ballynagall townland - see attached extract from c1840 OSI map.

Thank you for the map and for the information. It makes sense now as I couldnt find anything on Leny Parish, although it is mentioned in some of the family notes I have.

Hi Noeline
The following websites are helpful for orientation regarding civil parishes:
Civil Parish of Leny (townlands.ie) where you can find a handy list of all the adjacent parishes and townlands
Civil Parish of Leny (logainm.ie) where you can view a list of variations of a place name (esp. when a renaming occurred)
Parish of Leny maps & records (johngrenham.ie) a handy list of resources
And Geohive for viewing old and modern day Ordnance Survey maps

We are coming to Ireland in September to check out my Dagg ancestry. I am delighted to have received information from Ireland Reaching Out regarding whereabouts they lived and property they owned. as we are traveling to Ireland in a few weeks we would like some other places of interest in the area that we could visit. We will be traveling from Dublin to Westmeath and possibly Longford, then on to Galway for a couple of days, then we will make our way to Cork and then Wexford where we complete our 6 days in Ireland and go by ferry to Fishguard, Wales.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I recently came across some (possible) family notes that indicated our Robert David Dagg born 1826 was born in Carlow but have no records to back that up. His mother was Dorothea Kendrick and father Robert Dagg. It would be awesome if there is anything to back up this new information.
Thanks in advance.
