Any clues would be appreciated I have been through most Irish cronicles I could find.

  • Abraham & Robert Hezlet are both listed in the townland of Relagh in the 1828 tithe applotment records. Both would have been farmers if they were listed there.

    http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/fermanagh/tithe-applotment-books/parish-of-enniskillen.php

There were no Hezlets in Relagh by the time of Griffiths Valuation in 1862, so they had either died or left.

Relagh is about 4 miles north from Enniskillen. It’s on the modern Ardgart Rd. There’s not a lot too it. Just a handful of farms. (In 1901 there were 2 farms and a total population of 8).

Statutory death registration didn’t start in Ireland till 1864 so for deaths before that you won’t get a death certificate.  I assume the family was Churhc of Ireland (Anglican). The Church of Ireland does keep burial records but unfortunately those for Enniskillen were lost in the 1922 fire. So if that’s the parish where they were born and married there are probably no records to find. There are a handful of records for the parish, which can be viewed in PRONI in Belfast. The PRONI guide says they cover:

    [Earliest registers destroyed in Dublin]

    Extracts of baptisms, 1667-1789, marriages, 1668- 1794, and burials, 1667-1781; burials, 1879-1907 and 1941-50;vestry minutes, 1731-1920; copy deeds, 1796-9; select vestry minutes, 1871-80;

register of church members, 1871 and 1946-50; preachers’ book, 1895-1928.

Extracts from baptism, marriage and burial registers, 1666-1826.

Printed copy of Old Enniskillen Vestry Book, with extracts of births, marriages and deaths, 1666-c.1797.

Extracts from vestry minutes, 1666-1912, which include some baptism, marriage and burial entries.

  • Hello Porto,

My 3x great-grandfather was Robert Hazlett, died Co. fermanagh 1872, age 86. I don't have any information about his parents or siblings.   Was it children of Robert who emigrated to Australia? If you have information about names or dates I will see if anything matches with what I know of my Robert.

  • Hi

My 3 x G Grafater was Abraham he was born in 1780's or 1790's he had a brother Robert birth date unknown.

Abraham went to Australia with his family in 1851 with his second wife Sarah and his children who still lived with him

He lived in maitland NSW and died there in 1856 -death records show he was 61 but this conflict with first marriage in 1815.

2 of his nieces (Roberts daughters) Emmigrated to Maitland -on ship papers stated to live with there Uncle- They were Ellen born 1835  she married Edward Hourigan in Maitland NSW and Jane Anne Born 1836 she married Thomas Bussell in Maitland NSW

Roberts other children _ Samuel born 1839 Immigrated in 1864 to Sydney, Alice Born 1844 - apparently also migrated to Australia  cannot find when and Thomas Migrated in 1866 also to Sydney.

All the above is hear say except the immigration dates that I have checked.

I have also more Information if this is the right family.

Ron Porteus GGGson of Ann Porteus born Hazlett-

PS if you strt to look for the Hazlett family in Australia some of them changed the spelling to Heazlett this was most of Abrahams family

  • Hi,

Have you found death records for any of Robert's children? I have seen some Australian records that list the mother's name. I believe my Robert's wife's first name was Jane.

My Robert had a daughter Ann Ellen, who married in Ireland, so don't know if there would also have been another daughter with name Ellen.

Have you or any of your family had dna tested, by any chance? I have mine on Ancestry and FTDNA.

I have had a DNA test with My Heritage but do not know how to compare it with others

  • Hello:

I have a Robert Hazlett as my GGG GFather. He appears on the marriage record of his daughter Margaret to Thomas Glen in Enniskillen 10 Oct 1854.   I have a lot of sources for Margaret, and a lot for Thomas, but few sources for the Robert Hazlett listed as Margaret's father - and as we know, there were several ways of spelling 'Hazlett', and there were quite a few Hazletts in that part of Ireland at the time ...

Whilst I think we are referring to the same Robert Hazlett, I'd really like to access some additional sources

I'm not on MyHeritage unfortunately so can't access @Diane's info there.
