Hi everyone, I am looking for info on Robert Murphy who was born in Ireland I believe in 1833.  He emigrated to Quebec Canada at some stage and married a woman by the name of Maria who was born in 1843.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Paula,

As you are no doubt aware, Murphy is a very common name in Ireland.

    There are 3 Robert Murphys on rootsireland.ie born 1833 - 1 Kilkenny, 1 Louth and 1 Antrim.

I searched the Canadian Censuses on ancestry (which is free at the moment) and the only match i could find in the 1901 census has Robert age 68 born 4 June 1832 in Quebec but Tribal Origin Irish.

Maria is aged 58 born 30 June 1842 Ireland.

    John 33 Arthur 27 Albert 27 Bertha 25 Norman 22

Address is L'Ange Gardien Lavelle Quebec.

The 1891 census is the same.

Their religion is Protestant which probably means they were from a Northern County; the only northern county of the three above is Antrim.

ancestry also has the baptismal record of Robert Murphy 1833 Quebec. It is really hard to read and my French isn't good but I think it says New Ireland which i believe was a town in Quebec for irish immigrants. It looks like there are names Charles Murphy & Judith Reyne and John Murphy & Mary Hough. I assume the parents are Charles & Judith.

I searched again for the birth record with the different parents but had no luck!

The Tithe Applotments 1823-27 would have been a good source to check for Murphys in Antrim but Antrim is not included!

Maybe you could have alook on ancestry. There are some public member trees with the family which may help too.

    Col
