I am wondering if someone could help me wih interpreting a Valuation Book record and putting it into context of the history of the area in 1843.
The record is on the Ireland Valuation Book 1843 Scarawalsh
Robert Sly, no 40 Duffrey St.
I cannot decide what it is that Robert hires out and need help in understanding the observation at the far right of the page.
I understand that Duffrey St is now Cathedral St and it seems strange if he "keeps cows for hire" in a town.
with thanks

Margaret,
I think it says “Keeps cars for hire.” eg jaunting cars. As an example see: https://killarneyjauntingcars.com

Thank you so much Elwyn. I had no idea of such carts and can now look further. Do you have any thoughts about the comments in the observation column?

Margaret,
The observations say: “Holds from Mr Sparrow a very small garden. Sly lets the loft of the stable to poor people.”
So evidently Mr Sly was a decent man who didn’t mind the odd beggar sleeping in his stable loft.
