Would appreciate help gaining any information on the Robertson & Lamont families of County Tyrone. John Robertson, a Blacksmith, aged 22 years, left Ireland in 1841 for NSW, Australia. He travelled aboard the ship Broom which left Glasgow on 15/10/1841 & arrived in Sydney 13/2/1842. His father was Thomas Robertson, a "Farmer", and mother was Jane Lamont. Both were alive at the time of his departure. On shipping records he states he was a native of Ballyclog, County Tyrone. A copy of this record which has background information is attached.

I suspect the two families were from an area west of Lough Neagh, from Cookstown-Coagh, south to Moy. John may have even worked as a Blacksmith in Moy. I also think John was not an eldest son.

Thanks for any help.

  • Ballyclog is a parish in Tyrone. If Thomas Robertson was a farmer there and alive in 1841 you would expect him to be listed in the tithe applotment books. The only Thomas in 1826 was Thomas Robson in Ballyveeny. (Robson is a common variation of Robertson, as is Robinson).

There’s no Robson (and variant spellings) household in Ballyveeny by the time of Griffiths Valuation in 1859 suggesting that either the family had died or moved.

Ballyveeny today is on the modern Gortnaskea Rd, between Coagh and Stewartstown.

John Robertson’s denomination was given as Episcopalian in his immigration document. In Ireland, that’s Church of Ireland. Ballyclog Church of Ireland parish records start in 1818 so you might just find his baptism, as well possibly his parents burials.  Ballyclog’s baptism records don’t appear to be on-line anywhere but there is a copy in PRONI, the public record office in Belfast. A personal visit is required to view them.

  • Thanks Elwyn for looking into this.

John Robertson remarried in 1897, and at that time declared his father as deceased and a Farmer. So perhaps he may have been involved in farming without being an owner/tenant. As I live in Australia, it may be some time before I get to Belfast !!

    Thanks again.

    Regards, Steve.
