Can someone tell me what the abbreviation “R.D.C.” stand for after someone’s last name.  I also see the abbreviation “J.P., R.D.C” after some names, too.  An explanation of the abbreviations would also be helpful.  A copy of the newspaper article is attached for your reference.  As always, many thanks.  Caren Convery Matyckas

    The newspaper clipping isn’t attached.

    However RDC usually means Rural District Council. So a local administrative body. If it’s after someone’s name I’d guess they worked for the council.

    J.P. means Justice of the Peace. A lay Magistrate. So a person of some standing in the community. Able to authorise search warrants and certain official documents.  Today they might countersign a passport application, or something like that.

  • Thank you so much for the clarification; it’s extremely helpful.  Now I just have to fit Charles Convery (Manus) into my family tree.  What caught attention in the newspaper article was the name, Charles Convery (Msnus), who is somehow connected to my great great grandfather, John Convery (Manus).  Again, thank you soooo much for the quick response; it’s renewed my search for my Convery (Manus) ancestors in Rocktown.  Stay well/be safe.  Sincerely, Caren Convery Matyckas

  • It looks to me from the article that the Agricultural class was held in Rocktown, but Charles lived in Gulladuff. This may be him in 1911. He looks to have run a pub and village shop (a common arrangement in those days).
