I am researching Honora Kennedy born 6th Sept 1832 Acres County Kerry. She died in Australia 1908.  Her parents were Rodger Kennedy born abt.1810 County Kerry and died abt.1861. Her mother was M. Ann Callahan born about 1809 County Kerry and died abt. 1881. Any information on Rodger and M. Ann Callahan would be appreciated.

  • Colleen,

The RC parish of Annascaul as shown in the record of Hanora's birth on irishgenealogy.ie  is another name for the RC parish of Ballanvohir. The town land of Acres is in Ballanhvohir.  The birth records have gaps, and the marriage records start in 1829, so her parents were probably married before then. I've seen your tree and others on Ancestry with two brothers for Hanora...Roger and Jerry. They were probably born in one of those gap years. What I did find on irishgenealogy.ie that might be helpful was a Jeremiah Callahan & Catherine Griffin as parents to Elizabeth 30 Jun 1830, Acres, sponsors - Thomas Fitzgerald & Ellen Callahan; and a "NR" Callahan, 20 March 1833, Acres, sponsors Laurence Griffin. On Honora's birth record in Roots Ireland, it shows a J Callahan & Catherine Fitzgerald as her sponsors.

So, this information might help to expand the Callahan sibling line, and that often leads to new discoveries.

  • Hi Carolyn, thank you very much for your help.  I do find it all a bit confusing but will try to work it out.

  • Colleen,

Don't be confused! :) It's fun trying to piece these things together....sometimes they work out. I was trying to point out that M. Ann, Jeremiah, and Ellen might all be siblings because siblings were often, but not always, selected as baptismal sponsors. Of course, just because they share the same surname, doesn't make them siblings...they could also be cousins or some other relation. M. Ann Callahan could have named her son Jeremiah (Jerry) after her brother Jeremiah. Did Hanora have a family in Australia? Her children's names could give a clue to making familial connections. When all the children emigrate without their parents, as this family seems to have, it is more difficult to track down death records for the parents....I have this same situation in my own family where the three children all emigrated to the US without the parents.

    Regards,
