I'm looking for information on Rosalie "Riah" Finlay who resided in Holywood Co. Down.  I'm not certain how long she lived there but she died there in 1977 at the age of 90 and her address at that time was 71 Devonshire Road, Holywood, Co. Down.  At the time of her death she was a dressmaker and widowed.  Her husband was John Finlay but I'm not certain that he ever lived in Holywood with her.  She was born in Russia and met John when he went to Narva, Russia to work in a linen mill there.  They returned to Ireland around 1917 but I'm not sure where they originally settled.  John died in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone in 1931.

If anyone has any information regarding Rosalie I would be most appreciative of any small bit.

Kind regards,

Libby Clarke

  • Dear Libby:

Thank you for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

We do not research within 100 years due to privacy issues.

However, you may be able to find a death notice for Rosalie Finlay through the Irish News Archives which is a subscription website.

The best of luck with your research.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Dear Libby,

Rosalie Finlay (née Kont) is my great grandaunt. My mother has got some of Rosalie's correspondence with her sister Olga Kont who lived on Põldmaa farm in Estonia. Olga died in 1965. I khow that my grandfather Emil Kont after he escaped from Estonia from the occupying German army in summer 1944 managed to get to the U.K. and he lived some years together with his aunt Rosalie (Roosi as she is known here), before he went on to Australia where he died in 1973.

There are gaps in my family history due to the Soviet regime, because people chose to be quiet and now there is nobody left to ask the questions from. Mabe we can help each other to fill in some gaps.

    You can contact me: katrin.villard@hotmail.com

  • Hi Katrin,

I have sent an email to your hotmail address but thought I would reply here as well.  I'm so sorry that I did not reply earlier but I was not aware that you had replied to my post.  I really look forward to hearing from you regarding Rosalie.  I know very little about her but understand that she married my great grandfather after his first wife died.  I don't know where they were married or when they returned to Ireland, however I believe that they returned around 1917.  My great uncle has a letter in which he writes that Rosalie was about 25 years younger than her husband, John Finlay.  I believe that he passed away in 1931 in the county of Tyrone. Rosalie must have moved to Holywood, County Down, Ireland.  I also have a letter sent to my great uncle from Rosalie and her address in Holywood.  I was able to find her death certificate with this information and found that she died in 1977.

Well that's enough for now.  I look forward to hearing from you with information about  Rosalie and her family.

    Regards,

    Libby Clarke
