My great great grandfather was Patrick Russell who married Mary Walsh(e) and had a son John Russell born in Ballyporeen Tipperary around 1860. John emigrated to Australia before 1883 and settled in Gympie Queensland Australia

My other great great grandfather was Cornelius Twomey who married Catherine Horrigan (Hourigan or Horgan) . They also emigrated to Australia and settled in Gympie, my great grandmother was born At sea off Cape Town 1866. I think Cornelius was born in County Cork around 1835.

Any Information would be helpful.

  • Hi Linda

I am the 2nd gt grandson of a John RUSSELL who married a Jane MARTIN in Mitchelstown, Co Cork, in Feb 1824.
John and Jane went on to have two children Marian bp 9 Nov 1824 and Patrick bp 28 Oct 1826 - both of these two births/baptisms took place in Ballyporeen.

All 5 of the subsequent births that I have found so far took place in Mitchelstown between 1828 and 1840 when my gt grandfather Thomas and then Catherine respectively were born.

The majority of this information was initially gained from Mallow Heritage (MH) and then from RootsIreland of which MH is a part. MH commented that the first mention they had of the surname RUSSELL was when Jane Martin married John Russell - maybe my Russells initially came from Ballyporeen?

Incidentally my mother's cousin Herbert Frank Beauchamp (b 1889) migrated to Oz in 1911 and married a Gympie girl, Agnes Williams, the following year. 'Herb' died in 1943 Burma while a PoW.

  • Thanks Hugo,

That information is interesting, I wonder why Gympie is a common theme, maybe gold mining.

  • Hi Linda

Apologies for taking 9 years to reply!

I have no proof of any siblings of John Russell but a gravestone at Templetenny (on Historic Graves) may give a clue, this is the link..................

My 3rd cousin, who lives in Mitchelstown, went to Templetenny at Easter this year and took some photographs, the inscription is still legible

The is another site that you may be aware of - Find-a-grave - but the stone has not yet been photographed

Have you taken and Ancestry DNA test or made any other progress?
