Hi-

2 questions:

My great grandmother, Mary Frances Ryan, and her brother, Thomas, were both born in Cappanouk (1870 and 1868, respectively) per church baptism records.

4 other known siblings:

Ellen, b abt 1858

Hanorah b abt 1861

John b. abt 1855

(All 3 married Wixteds from Co. Tipperary- Ellen married in Ireland, the others in the US)

Michael b abt 1854

Parents Michael Ryan and Ellen Fleming, married 17 Jun 1847, Murroe & Boher district, no townland specified.

All of these Ryans except the father, Michael, had emigrated by 1882 to New York.  I believe he died in Ireland.

Questions:

I can't find a record of the parents, Michael Ryan and Ellen Fleming Ryan, in any online documents, or on any Cappanouk registries, for the time they lived in Ireland.  I also can't find birth/baptism records for the 4 other known siblings.  I know there are MANY Ryans in this area, is there any way to narrow down the possibilities?  Is there a specific church in the town or the area that might have these records? Is there any record of deaths or a database that might contain Michael's birth, death and parentage?

Any help appreciated!  Thank you,

Lori

What kind of info were you looking for on Michael and Ellen ,was it there parents etc ??

I had a look in the fleming records to see if had any info on Ellen

I found 3 Ellen Baptised in Murroe around the right time

Ellen b 02 june 1819 To James Fleming and Joan Ryan

There are no death records within the parish ,

Since  he  would have died after 1864 there should be a civil record more info at

I am not sure if it would contain info about his parents

Hope the above info helps , let me know if you have any questions

Thank you so much.  That was really a lot more than I expected!  I suppose the name duplications indicate either a death of a child or a Christian middle name by which they were called?  Or is it possible that there was another couple with the same names that had some of those children? The last Mary born in 1870 is my great grandmother.

Yes, I did want to find birth/death/parent information for Michael Ryan and Ellen Fleming.  I checked the site you suggested for Michael, but I didn't see a way to request a record search remotely, other than paid research.  I also checked RootsIreland and Family Search (where there were over 15,000 records for Michael Ryan who died between 1869 and 1882).  Ellen's family may have originally come from Clare, so there is a possibility she was born there, but the redundancy of the name William in the children's names makes me think you may be right.

I will check for further information on the sibs and the sponsors.  I did not see a Michael Ryan on Griffith's in Cappanouk, but I did see one in Cappanahanagh.

Again, thank you so much for the information.  I can't tell you how much it means to me.

  • Hey Lori

Yes the name duplication would be due to a child dying most likely infancy and to keep the name in the family they would name the next child to same name. As there was 3 Mary's it is most likely the name of Ellens Mother.

Yes that website is payable  , but its not possible to get that info/Cert  from anywhere else , unless someone else has already got the cert from the GRO.and it can be hard enough to get if you don't have enough details.

Well as you have seen yourself  Ryan is a very common , so it a a lot of "Guesswork"

If he was married in 1847 we can say he probably  born sometime in the 1820's - Average age of men getting married  at the time was ~25

We can say that possibly his parents names were Michael and Ellen( going by the naming system- though can't be guaranteed)

I will do a search for Michael Ryan's in this time and get back to you with the info

If you believe Ellen to be from Clare you will have to post message ont heir page as i would have no info from that area. Also it was tradition at the time to get married in the Brides Parish . Seen as the got married in Murroe , it is most likely  she was also from Murroe( Although there are always exceptions!)

Looking at the sponsors is a good idea as most of the time there were relatives or neighbours.

  • Hello Aine-

Are there any cemeteries in the Cappanouk/Cappanahanagh area where the Ryans might have been buried?  I don't know what the custom is in Ireland, but cemeteries affiliated with the church here generally have plot maps and sometimes directories at the church office.  Whenever I get a chance to go to Ireland, I would like to check with them.  Any suggestions?

I am very, very grateful to you and IrelandXO for all the information you have provided.  IrelandXO has solved some decades long mysteries with regard to our Irish roots.  With Ryan being such a common name, I would have thought it would be impossible to find anything specific, but thanks to you, we have a whole family group to research (still sorting out relationships to the sponsors of 13 children, but it's a joyful task).

    Regards,

    Lori
