Ryans Garrane

Hi Annie,  Garrane in the civil parish of Ballygriffin, Catholic parish of Knovkavilla, about three miles from Cashel.

I have a lot of research done on this townland as ancestors of mine Raleighs lived there in The Tithes and Griffiths, all went to

Australia in 1850s.  In the 1901 census there was only one couple Ryans in Garrane,, D,E,D  Ballygriffin.

I would be interested in the obituary on the Nationalist which mentioned the Ryans as attending the funeral.

Thank you for responding! The Ryan family of Garrane are  listed high amongst the mourners at my grandfather Philip Condon’s funeral in Cahir in  August 1956 (he was a son of Johanna Ryan and a grandson of Philip Ryan). Additionally and I have just noticed this, an E. J..Ryan CC Knockavilla officiated as one of several priests  at the funeral of his wife, my grandmother Annie Condon (nee Carew) in Cahir, October 1917. On that basis, I think it's very likely that my Ryans were related to the Ryans in Garrane and to the priest in Knockavilla as even today it would be standard for a priest from the extended family to come along and concelebrate the Mass.  I do recall my father saying the Ryans originated from near Cashel but could not remember where. And there are so many Ryans!  If you think your research is relevant, would love to learn more about your findings. Obituaries enclosed. Regards, Annie

Hi Annie, That is an amazing list of relatives in both obituary,s.

most of them and the addresses I would not know,

I have a cousin living in Mayfield, if I cannot get him on the phone I will write to him, that is on 1917 obit.

The Godfrey,s Greenane, would be related to me early 1800s. in 1950s obit.

To the best of my knowledge they are stil there.

I am trying to locate Irelandxo volunteer who answers querys in the Cahir area, he has amazing local knowledge.

Hi Christine, thanks. I can account for a lot of the names listed and know what the connections are to the family. I don't know why the Godfreys of Greenane were there - they might have been friends perhaps of the family versus relatives? Not sure on that one.  I wondered if the fact that the Ryans of Garrane were listed significant or not. They may have been friends only but I suspect they were more likely relatives. (Philip Ryan's daughter, Johanna married Condon).

If it's Tom in Cahir you are thinking of, I  know him well and we have chatted several times.  I  have done quite a lot of research on the family in Cahir but Philip Ryan is the challenging one. I guess it's a good bit back and the records are scant. I don't know his parents names - there's a section of records missing from Cahir for that period so not sure where he was born and raised. He certainly got married in Cahir and had a business there.

f you have any information on the Ryans of Garrane that you could share, that would be great.  We thought we could sketch out a tree for them to see if we can find any evidence that the families intersect as it would point to my great great grandfather, Philip Ryan's family originating in Garrane.

Went through my files, and found small bit of follow on, from Griffiths valuatiom. no Ryan.s

but a Kelly.  There is a Kelly mentioned in the Obit.
