Samuel Arlow was my great grandfather, but that is nearly all I know of him. He had at least one child, my grandfather James, who was born in Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary in 1858 (but I do not have the precise date).

James married Frances (Fanny) Campbell in 1883 in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, and he remained there until his death, whilst Frances eventually moved to England to be closer to her two sons, one of whom was my father, John Birch Matthews Arlow.

I am looking for any information on Samuel, including his wife, parents and any other children, and the birth date of James.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I'm assuming the Church of Ireland parish would have been Modreeny and their earlier records were destroyed in the 1922 Public Records Office fire in Dublin. When I searched for Samuel Arlow, the surname Arlow was an Ulster surname primarily in Co. Down and Co. Antrim. Since Samuel was an engineer likely he moved around a lot.

If James was a school teacher likely this is his 1897 death record and Fanny was living with him at the time.

  • James was a teacher for music, as was his wife; he died in 1897 at the young age of 39 in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, but although I have his birthplace as Cloughjordan in Co. Tipperary I do not have a precise date.

The only record I have of Samuel Arlow is from James & Fanny's marriage certificate, which took place in Ballymoney on 25th December 1883. I have no other knowledge of Samuel and nothing of his wife, other children, parents or siblings. I am aware that a lot of records were destroyed in a fire but am looking for any alternative routes to find any information at all.
