I'm looking for information on my 3x greatgrandparents, Samuel Stinson and Ann or Jane Potts, born Ireland.. Samuel's father was also a Thomas Stinson. There is one reference that they were from Breifne, another mentions Cavan, Ireland. They were Anglican/Church of Ireland. Samuel and Ann had 5 or 6 children born Ireland including Ellen (b. 17 Dec. 1830), Eliza/Elisabeth (b. 15 Oct 1832), Thomas (b. 1836), Margaret (b. 1838). Samuel also had a son Francis (b. Feb 1822) but perhaps a different mother as Samuel and Ann reportedly got together around 1828/29. Birthdates may be baptismal dates, none of them confirmed.
They settled in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada around 1840 where Samuel built a hotel. Another daughter, Sophia, was born in Canada in 1841. Samuel was murdered in 1846 and much of this information comes from the newspaper report of the trial. Ellen, Eliza and Thomas Jr. all testified, as did Samuel's father Thomas. Francis took over the hotel.

Hi Linda,
I attach some records from Roots Ireland - www.rootsireland.ie which may be of assistance. Cootehill appears to be the nearest town for location and Clones in Co. Monaghan is a short distance North of there.
There are many variations of the surname!

Thanks so much, the first one looks quite promising. I'll follow up on these.

Hi Linda,
There is a new post you might also want to check out...."Stinson family, Lattacoppel & Megheratemple". A bit more information on the Thomas Stinson line.
I'm from the William Stinson line.
There are a number of Stinson families that came to Ontario around the same time.....not necessarity related.
Regards,
Deborah Stinson
