Hello, New Friends!

I just joined this group and am eager to pursue my Irish roots.

My 3rd m grandmother's name was Sarah Sally Todd.  She was born ~1790, and immigrated from Ireland to USA ~1811.She married John Miller in PA ~ 1814.

I don't know if she was actually born in Ireland.  Records indicate she immigrated from Ireland, but they seem to indicate she was perhaps born in Scotland?

How would I go about finding if she was from Ireland?

Thanks!

SLantz

  • The Tithe Applotment books were done 1820/30's. Searching for Todd may give you areas where the name was popular. Online it is a bit hit and miss finding the Tithes. National Archives has one database but it still has teething problems and does not represent all of the Ulster Counties.

Griffiths valuations is much more comprehensive but is also much later 1848-1864.

  • Do you know Sarah's religion. She may have been a Scots-Irish Prebyterian. Many Scots-Irish went to the States but in waves.I think the first wave of emigration for them was to PA .If you check on the history of these you may find out more.

http://www.emeraldancestors.com/ has records of Todd but it appears to be a common name in Northern Ireland.

  • Thanks for the reply.  Yes, she was Scots-Irish Presbyterian.  I will pursue your hints.
