Searching for family history  of Patrick Savage baptised 1852 Curraheen. Emigrated Australia with brother Maurice about 1882. We have there fathers name as Maurice Savage & mother as either Mary Carmody or Mary Corcoran. Possible brother named Daniel baptised 1855?? Any help greatly appreciated. Patrick is my great grandfather & I live in Australia. Thanks Mark Quealy Patrick probably arrived in Australia when he was about 30. He worked in Australia as a wheelwright & my father had several of his chisels. My father believed that the metal part of the chisels were cast about 300 years ago. If this is correct I assume Patrick brought them with him when he emigrated. I wonder if he did an apprenticeship in his home town of Curraheen. If that was the case it would have been around 1867. Does anyone know of any Irish wheelwright apprenticeship records?

  • Hi Mark, hope you and yours are safe during this awful time.

It would be worth checking the microfilms for Tralee here https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0680 to see if you can pick up either of those marriages for Maurice. Also worthwhile checking the marriages listed below for maiden name of mother as this might help also.

Margaret Savage daughter of Maurice (no mother's name) married Stephen Baily 1868.

Also  Catherine Savage, married Jeremiah Shea 1869.

James Savage married Catherine O'Sullivan 1867

Best of luck and do let us know how you get on.

  • Still no luck finding a Mary Savage nee Corcoran as mother for my Great Granfather Patrick Savage & his brother Maurice who both migrated to Australia. My family believes that Mary Carmody was the mother of Patrick despite Mary Corcoran appearing on Patrick's baptismal certificate in Curraheen in 1852. I can't find any records on Mary Corcoran at all which supports our family theory that it was a typo on his baptismal certificate. Patrick's dad was definitely Maurice Savage of Curraheen though I suspect he is sometimes confused with another Maurice Savage from Dromgower. I have had recent contact with a family in Curraheen but we haven't managed to solve this puzzle yet. Any help much appreciated. My great grandfather Patrick didn't pass on any stories of the home country. We think he may have done his apprenticeship as a wheel right before leaving Ireland. He was a man of few words unfortunately.
