Family lore indicates that my great great great grandfather, last name Kennedy, was an educator in Nenagh in the early 1800's. His son, Jeremiah Kennedy, was born there in 1815. Jeremiah married Sarah Cleary in Nenagh in 1843 and had many children. Are there school records online that I could search for Jeremiah's father, the educator? Thank you!

I don't believe there are records online for school records from Nenagh for the mid-19th century or earlier. The Tipperary Studies site has information on schools in the county in the 19th century. It appears they only have records for two schools but not for Nenagh.

  • Hello,

Whilst Tipperary Studies covers Tipperary in many aspects it only covers certian records as they are available or not. School records would not be historical archives but a government system? Anything in a library or other archive would be there by chance or by being rescued from the bin. You may find that Nenagh was treated differently for its school records from other places in Tipperary because you would need to know the government structure for such thngs and contact the Education department?

Another feature of records here is that Tipperary BMD records can occur in any centre - wherever the record was made. My family's Sate BMDs for instance are covered by Tipperary Town, Nenagh, Cashel, Clonoulty, Limerick - five different repositories? Why? Either it was market day in one of them and or they had travelling recorders to pick up on the rural BMD?

It pays to think laterally here, this was never a rigid system :)
