I have the bapitsm date for one of my ancestors, Julia T O'Donnell - born April 26, 1868 and baptized April 29, 1868 in Co. Tiperary. Parents Thomas and Julia O'Donnell (nee Dolan). I am wondering if it is possible to search all parish records in Tipperary for those specific dates? It seems not, but I am new to ancestry research and could use some tips. Julia T O'Donnell also graduated from St. Briged's Academy in Carlow in 1888 so I sent some e-mails to that organization to see if I can find out more information.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There is no way to search on the major subscription sites by baptismal day. I did search for Julia and I'm not having any success. Civil registration of births started in 1864 so if Julia was born in 1868, there should be a civil birth record. I searched on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie but did not find any Julia O'Connells in Tipperary. They were mostly in Co. CorkAs an aside, in the 19th century most O'Connells would have been shown as Connell.

I also searched on two subscription sites, Roots Ireland and FindMyPast and did not find a record for Julia.

Did she have any siblings? Was she still in Ireland in 1901?

  • Hi Kaitlyn,

Julia was baptised in St. Columb's, Derry City. See the church record for the parents you specified, and the same date. Given the rareness of Julia as a name at that point, I think there is no doubt this is the record you want.

  • Hello,

I found this that may be useful

Julianna Donnell, 22 Mar 1868, St Peter & Paul, Clonmel, Tipperary border with Waterford

Domincuws Donnell = Elisa McCarty  sponsors: Jacobus Hurley and Maria Ryan

On FindMyPast it is possible to search baptismal dates in the whole of Ireland but by year, not specific dates. The record will have specific baptismal dates, it may, rarely, have a birth date and baptismal date but if you do get one it will be within about three days. The custom was to baptise the birth as soon as possible or it would not be accepted into heaven if it died, as so many did, soon after birth.
