Greetings. My name is James Emmett Duffy III.  I am searching for my Duffy ancestors, who some tentative evidence suggests may have been from the area of Mullingar, Co Westmeath. I would appreciate any leads.  Here is what I know:

My great great grandfather Daniel Duffy was born in Ireland between about 1835 to 1840, son of Peter Duffy and Mary (unkown maiden name). Daniel emigrated to America at an unknown time before 1862, when he married Anna Plunkett (another Irish immigrant, with a more certain connection to Taghmon parish, Co Westmeath) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The couple settled and raised their family in Cincinnati, as did the next three generations of Duffys.  Daniel had two known siblings, both of whom also settled in Cincinnati, James and Mary (married name Brophy). I have recorded their histories, as far as I know them, at  FamilySearch.org, where Daniel and Anna have ID #s LR12-2S7 and LR12-L3V, respectively.

I was led to Co Westmeath by searching for Daniel Duffy and his siblings. I have not found one family with all three siblings but here is a possible candidate family:

Peter Duffy and Mary Quade, married 11 Nov 1835, Mullingar RC parish, County Westmeath (https://www.findmypast.ie/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FMAR%2F1456060%2F1). Two known children:

  1. James Duffy, Baptism: 11 Sep 1836, Mullingar RC parish, County Westmeath . Father Peter Duffy, Mother Mary Quade. (https://rootsireland.ie/ifhf/view_detail.php?recordid=505354&type=bch&recordCentre=westmeath&page=1).

  2. Mary Duffy, Baptism 11 April 1842, Mullingar RC parish, County Westmeath. Father Peter Duffy, Mother: Mary McGead (https://rootsireland.ie/ifhf/view_detail.php?recordid=652531&type=bch&recordCentre=westmeath&page=1).

This is perhaps grasping at straws but this family is promising because the names of the parents (Peter and Mary, admittedly common names) match the known names of Daniel’s parents; the two offspring match names of Daniel's only two known relatives in America; and the birth years are about right. But there is no record of Daniel. Not a deal-breaker since Irish baptism records are spotty.

I am interested in any knowledge of the Duffy family sin the area around the 1820s-1840s that might shed light n Daniel’s ancestry. Many thanks in advance.

Emmett Duffy
