DNA test results place my Irish family in Galway and South Connemara.  I don't know if the surname spellings are the same as when the families were in Ireland.  I can't find immigration records.  Believe my Degnan grandmother was born in U.S. in 1887.  Her mother was a Dorsey.  My great grandparents may have been the ones who emigrated.  I will appreciate any help in guidance and direction.  I would like to claim my Irish citizenship.

In order to file for foreign birth Irish citizenship you have to have a grandparent born in Ireland.

Do you have the names of your great-grandparents and what was your grandmother's name? The surname in Ireland may have been Duignan.

  • My great grandparents were Bartley Degnan and Ellen Dorsey Degnan.  Again, not sure of the spelling prior to emigration.  Thank you.

Bartholomew Degnan and Ellen Dorsey married in Boston on August 3 1873. Bartholomew was 21 and Ellen was 22. The father of Bartholomew was James and his mother Bridget. The parents of Ellen were Hugh and Bridget. I found this record on Ancestry.com Do you have access to Ancestry?

I went back to the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for Bartholomew but I did find a lead for Ellen Dorsey. There was a record of a baptism on February 27 1851 at St. Nicholas church in Galway city for an Ellen D'Arcy with father Hugh D'Arcy and mother Bridget Hession. I think this is likely the correct record.

  • Roger,

Thank you so much for your help.  My Ancestry.com account is not active right now, due to my time constraints.  I seem to go down too many rabbit holes on that site.  I really, really appreciate your help with this.  I would never have known what to look for, especially with the different spelling.  I will likely be back in Ireland in 2023 to do some more searching.  I guess the place to start will be St. Nicholas Church in Galway city.  I was last there in 2018.  It's been too long.  If there are any other places, records for me to search, I would appreciate your suggestions.  Again, thank you!
