I'm searching for information on Dennis McGrath. He came to New York from Ireland in the 1850's. He married a Fanny Putnam and had 5 children: Thomas, James, George and twins Dennis and Mary. I'm unable to find where in Ireland he is from but I know that a lot of the Irish that settled in his part of Vermont werwe from County Tipperary. Any ideas would be very appreciated!

  • Hi Dana,

There are 2 public member trees on ancestry (Timothy Baker & Vermont Kelly Boys) which have Denis's birth in Limerick 1840. he was married to Deila (Fanny A) Putnam.

I was able to verify the record on www.rootsireland.ie/ which is a pay site but if you purchase the record for a few $ it will give you his parents' names and the parish they lived in.

With his father's name you could search the Tithe Applotments (1823-37 & freely available on-line) which would show you wherethey lived.

  • Hi Col,

Thank you for your reponse! I'm on ancestry.com and know of the people you suggested. I tried www.rootsireland.ie/ and was not able to find a birth or baptism for a Dennis McGrath. Am I doing something incorrectly? I have found other records there but no luck with a Dennis McGrath in Limerick. I don't have a father's name but his oldest son was named Thomas and I have read that many Irish Named their first son after their own father. if it is true it is very helpful to us family researchers. Thanks again for writing!! Dana

  • Hi again Dana,

I checked again and the record is definitely there.

I searched baptisms/births surname McGrath first name Denis 1840 + - 0 years & ticked Limerick only in the county list.

I can't attach it to this page but can send to another email address if you can't find it.
