I am coming to Ireland in late August with my two aunts, ages 86 and 94. They wish to find information on their ancestors. Their mother, Mary Dewan's ancestors came from Clonmel. I have no other information at this time as the tombstones are presently inaccessible due to the large amount of snow we have. I can try in the spring unless you can help us find information before. Thanks. Elizabeth Morey (my grandmother was Mary Dewan)

Hi there,
Saw your post regarding Elizabeth Dewan in Clonmel. I live here in Clonmel and have never come across the surname Dewan, however there are many families of Dwan. These would be pronounced the same so I would advise that you consider all possible spellings of your surname. As you probably know already, many names were spelled phonetically in the ports of arrival.
There are two websites that may be of interest to your research. One is the irishfamilyhistoryfoundation. this website lets you search many parish records but will only charge you when you want to see a particular record. It is not too expensive, about €5 per record. It helps if you know as much information as you can so that you can cross reference parishes. Start just with Marys name and see how many hits you get. Each county has its own heritage centre so you'll be looking at the one for South Tipperary. It's free to join and trawl through.
The second site which may be helpful is clonmelgraveyards. This site costs just €10 for the year and covers all the burials in all the parishs of Clonmel and also the surrounding parishes.
I think you will do much better on these national sites than you would on ancestry.com which is outrageously expensive.
Hope you find your family roots.
All the best,
Anne Dennehy

I am researching the Iowa (USA) railroad heroine Kate Shelley/Shelly, who was baptized in Dunkerrin, Offaly, in 1863. Her mother was Margaret Dewan (later spelled Dwan) of James Dewan and Catherine Carroll, and her father was Michael Shelly (born about 1840 in Counaganeen/Bourney, Tipperary) of James Shelly and Mary Connors. If you have relations with these folks or know more about them, drop me a line!
