My name is Linda Anne Flannigan Stanley, I live in the United States, in Ohio right now but am born and raised in New Jersey. I was told that my Great Grandfather came to America through New York from Northern Ireland around 1880 - 1900. I have hit a complete dead end here in the States. I am only going on what Iv'e been told from my father. I dont know my Ancestor's first name but my Grandfather who was born in New York in 1901 and my Father who was born in New Jersey in 1928 are both named Charles Flannigan. Any sort of help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance..

  • Hi Linda-Anne,

Without knowing a surname it will be extremely difficult to trace your great grandfather, there is such thing as a naming pattern but knowing that the name Charles re-occured does not say your great grandfather was a Charles too, often the eldest son was named after the father so it depends if he was the eldest, youngest or someone in the middle.

Using the year of birth of your grandfather in 1901 we can only guess that your great grandfather might be born between 1870 and 1880 or something .

I have checked the Ellis Island passenger records and there are 3 possible matches if he traveled trough Ellis Island New York

My advise would be to get all possible records from the USA first, your fathers marriage certificate should give your grandfathers full name and your grandfathers marriage or death certificate should give details of your great grandfather.

A possible record of your grandfather :

    Name: Charles Flannigan
    Gender: Male
    Birth Date: 5 Oct 1899
Birth Place: Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey
    Father's Name: John Flannigan
    Father's Age: 35
    Father's Birth Place: Ireland
    Mother's Name: Mary Coque
    Mother's Age: 24
    Mother's Birth Place: Ireland

    And maybe your great grandfather:
