I'm searching for records in Ulster pertaining to these ancestors, surname Haugherty (spelling may vary). All were born in Ireland but the family left Ireland between 1834 and 1841 and lived in County Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1841. They were probably Catholic. My great grandfather, Hugh Haugherty, married Jane Swan in Scotland. He emigrated to America in April 1852 at age 26.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin such as a parish in Ulster. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

Do you have any documentation that mentions any place names at all? Records such as Scottish census records, wills, civil registration records, even unofficial documents such as letters or diaries may give you the information you need.

Have you tried doing a search on the surname to try and narrow down a location? I used the Irish Times surname search engine. This gives a list of how many households had a specific surname in Ireland during the mid-19th century. I couldn?t find any results for Haugherty, and wasn?t sure of what variations there are of the name. There were results returned for Haughery however. Only 3 results were returned, all of which were from Tyrone. You can see the results, and do your own searches at the following link:

You could also try searching for James or Catherine in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records that were compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland. Although they do not offer any genealogical information they can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. You can search these here:

Have you already searched for the family at https://familysearch.org/? this is a huge online database of genealogical records compiled by the Church of the Latter Day Saints. If you can find some record for any of these people it may give you a parish name, or at least a county.
