Hi!

My Grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Apjohn, was born in Ireland on 24 May, 1879. She came to the USA in 1901, married my Grandfather in 1902 and died in 1918. Her parents were John Joseph Apjohn (1848 - 1908) and Elizabeth Apjohn Callaghan (1848 -1919). They both came to the USA in 1904 and lived here until their deaths. I have found Elizabeth's birth placed listed as Killarney, Kerry, Ireland. Interested in learning more about these families.

  • Hi

Remember to post as much information as you can regarding the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Do you know much about their emigration? Often more information was given at the port of arrival than the port of departure - if you knew where they arrived - this may lead to further information.

If you haven't already -You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) for members of the family. The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Some records for County Kerry are available free of charge from  www.irishgenealogy.ie.

  • Hi Mary Ellen,

Thank you for replying to my message. You have given me some information I didn't have!

As for Thomas, I have no information concerning John's siblings, so this would be news to me. Do you have the age for Thomas? I have John's father's name as Patrick, born in Wales, and his mother's name as Elizabeth Benway, born in Ireland. Ihave also seen her last name as "Brians" and "Evans".

    Thanks,

  • Thomas living in Dublin may not be related but it's worth looking into.  Do you know how to search the irish censuses?  I'm thinking the odds are pretty high that those two are related since apjohn is not an irish name.  Did Mary's brother Thomas emigrate to the uS with his parents?  Do you have ancestry.com because they have english censuses on there.  Where are you located in the US?  I'm in worcester county Mass.

Also this Thomas living in Dublin was a farmer and not too far off the age of John in Kerry.  Both men have different religions Thomas is Church of Ireland or Episcopalian..  John is Catholic.  Just to add spice to the story...

  • Hi Mary Ellen,

I don't know how to find the Irish Census, let alone search them;-)

Mary's brother Thomas emigrated to the USA in 1903, a year before their parents.

I have an Ancestory.com account but it's only for the US. I cannot access the English Census.

I'm in the town of Hanson in Plymouth County, Mass.

I have heard that the Apjohn family came from Wales, but have not been able to confirm it.

  • Hi Wayne

You can view/search census info here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ (it's free!)

Take the time to read through the 'How To Search' Option -they have alot of helpful information listed.

The National Archives also has information now available online for the Tithe Applotment Book from the early 19th century - you can see those here: http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

Again - read all the info to get an idea of how use the material.

You can also use Griffiths Valuation for information regarding the mid 19th century - the most user friendly site for that is http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/history-heritage/irish-genea…

The site will give you detailed info on 'what it is' - and 'how to use it' .

    Hope some of this helps!

    All the best.
