Hey all, I'm trying to get information to get an Irish passport. Unfortunately my great-grandfather passed away a long time ago before I got the information, and my father doesn't know the information I am needing.
He was born on January 15, 1908 (my dad guesses the year?!), name James A (Alfonse) King
The information I found that might be him is from the National Archives:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Monagay/Ballykenny/638114/ or maybe
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Templeglentan/Tulligoline_North/636703/
I don't know when my grandpa came to America, but my dad was born here in 1940. I know I have cousins that are still in Ireland who came to my grandpa's funeral in Chicago. Unfortunately I was unable to attend as I lived too far away.
If anyone has any information that might be able to help me, I would be grateful! :)
Thanks,
Sabrina (King) Wilson

Hi Sabrina,
The record is available on rootsireland.ie (just google it & register then search with the info you posted
baptisms/births King James year 1908 + - 1 county Kilkenny
The record will come up. I checked the parish and it is Templeglantine R C.
You will need to purchase the record to get his parents but rootsireland.ie has a sale on so you have timed it well!

Dear Col,
Thanks very much for your input! I saw that on the link and wonder if it's the right one, since when I click on it the baptism date says 1907 (they want me to buy to find out more details). Supposedly my grandfather was born in 1908, though of course there may be some confusion on all that since my dad was never able to find any official paperwork when going through my grandfather's stuff. Could the date info be wrong for the baptism? Too bad James King is such a common name! :)
This is what I've found so far:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBGR-7TG
(no parent info!)
This is my first guess from the 1911 census: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Monagay/Ballykenny/638114/
and this is my second guess:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Templeglentan/Tulligoline_North/636703/
but either way both are showing 3 years old in 1911 - so January 1907 wouldn't work for that census.
Thanks for your help!

In my experience (a year or two) there is quite a bit of inaccuarcy in the records Sabrina.
There were literacy issues, transcription errors, family secrets and other factors affecting them.
You could research to check the month the census was done - I think I recall 1st June - so that means if he hadn't ey had a birthday that year....

Also if they were baptisms not birth records, baptisms could have been done when the child was a few years old.

I just found this, posted by my late brother: http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=1003&p=localities.britisles.ireland.lim.general
I guess that I'm going with 'Daniel' and 'Catherine' for his parent's names! :) Now I just have to see what else I need for that Irish Passport. :D

I couldn't find a birth for James with thoses parents on rootsireland nor any mention on the trees on ancestry BUT there is a marriage record of Daniel King & Catherine - Limerick 1905!

Dear Col,
Thanks again for you all of your help and input! :)
Besides my brother's info, the reason I picked Daniel and Catherine was from this information in the National Archives from the 1911 Census: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Monagay/Ballykenny/638114/
Actual picture: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002779438/
I think the census was taken in the summer.
I found this really interesting report about Daniel's death:
(PDF file newspaper report) http://www.limerickcity.ie/media/10%2026%201922%20ambrose%20&%20king%20inq.pdf
I guess the question is now, how do I prove that I'm related to them? We don't have my grandpa's birth certificate. Anyone can find stuff online. :(

Hi Sabrina,
I googled Irish phone book & searched residential for King Templeglantine.
There are 2 listed; matbe you could write a letter with your ancestral information included asking about connection to Daniel.
We have had some success using this approach.
I don't know much about DNA matching but wonder if that would be an option?

Hey Col,
Thank you for all of your help - could you tell me where you found the information about the marriage? Maybe a link? I've been searching online with no luck so far. I'm trying to find out Catherine's info now (making a family tree :) ).
Thanks
Sabrina

is that the full address - no numbers are listed? Or maybe the mail man knows them by name!
DNA might be an option but even the reduced price of $180 is out of my budget! ;)
I'm hoping to find my grandparent's marriage certificate, that might be enough - I can get my dad's birth certificate easy enough.

Yes that's all the address you need

Hey Col!!
I heard back from a cousin in Ireland! His grandfather was Patrick, my grandfather's brother! :)
Here's part of his email to me:
On the 1911 census your grandfather has a brother Patrick. That is my father so we are not distant relatives...
I will go through my records to get my data on the family to you. You have hundreds of cousins both near and distant! Billy KingWoo Hoo! :D

That's great news for you after all that searching Sabrina - thanks for sharing the good news!
I assume you know the Irish Censuses are free to search online.
