Hello,

I'm researching Charles Tobin, born in Tipperary, Ireland in 1841 to Michael Tobin and Anastasia Kennedy. I know he migrated to Canada as he married my 2x great grandmother, Mary Ann Martin (widow of Power) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1875 at St Mary's Basilica. They had 3 sons and he died aged 49 years old on 21 May 1890 also in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was a shoemaker by trade. He was cremated and is buried at Holy Cross cemetery in Halifax. Any information about his birth, siblings and parents would be much appreciated. I don't know if he migrated on his own or if his parents and/or siblings came with him. I hope someone else is researching or is related to this family.

Thank you for any information and assistance!

  • Audrey,

Subscription site  www.rootsireland.ie has a Jacob Tobin baptised in the parish of Ballyneale on January 5th 1842. Parents: Michael Tobin and Anastasia Kennedy.  "Jacob" is another name for James.

There is also a Martin Tobin with the same parents baptised in Ballyneale on November 11th 1844.

Ballyneale parish is now known as "Ballyneale Grangemockler".  I have not found a baptism for Charles Tobin, or the marriage record for Michael and Anastasia.

I will get back to you.

    Regards,

  • Audrey,

The parish baptism records for Ballyneale began in 1839, so Charles was probably born prior to that year. Also, the marriage records for that parish began in 1839, so there is not a record for his parents. I expanded the year range on Roots Ireland that McCoy spoke of above and found possible siblings for Michael...these names are common, so take this with a grain of salt....

Michael Tobin & wife Margaret Kennedy....daughter Judith born 1859.

John Tobin & wife Margaret Kennedy (different from above)......children: Marian, 1853; Richard, 1855; Michael, 1858; and Margaret, 1861.

As Charles named two of his sons Michael and John, I thought there could perhaps be a connection.

    Regards,

  • Audrey,

Further to previous Post, I attach land records for a Charles Tobin and a Michal Tobin - Tithe Records 1833 and Griffith's Valuations 1850. The address is Ballytohill and Ballinruan.

Baptism records for Jacob Tobin and Martin Tobin - January 5th1842 ( Top of left hand page) and November 11th1844. (Centre of right hand page)

Civil records in Ireland are from January 1st 1864.

There is a Facebook Page - Ballyneale and Grangemockler Community - which you may consider joining.

  • Audrey,

I attach copies of the 1901 and 1911 Irish census. They are likely to be the same family as Michael Tobin and Anastasia Kennedy Tobin. It appears, based on the 1901 census that James was married twice.

The 1881 Halifax census shows similar names to Charles' parents. It is likely that the Charles recorded in the the land records was the father of Michael.

You can access Birth, Marriage and Death records from January 1864 at  www.irishgenealogy.ie  - Free

  • Audrey,

Per RootsIreland, James Tobin (53) from the 1901 census above married Ellen Morrissey in 1893. He had previously been married to Mary Tobin in 1880. In both records, Charles was designated as father. James' brother, Michael, is also listed on the 1901 census (58).

  • Per RootsIreland, in 1854 a Mary/ Marian Tobin was born in Ballyneale to Charles Tobin and Brigid Meagher/ Maher. Perhaps she is James and Michaels' (above) sister. I did not find birth records for James or Michael.

  • Per RootsIreland, Martin Tobin on the 1911 census identified above married Mary Shea O'Neale in 1875 in Ballyneale. They were both farmers. Mary was a widow (35) and Martin was 30. Father's first names weren't identified. They were both deceased. According to Civil Records, their son Martin was born in 1877 in Baudonel, Garrangibbon and their daughter was born in 1883 in Brenormore, Garrangibbon. Ellen's Church Record shows Ballyneale. Mary Shea Tobin died before the 1901 census.

  • Audrey,

This might be your Charles' brother.

Per Ancestry.com, in the 1871 Canadian Census there was a James Tobin , born abt.1845 in Ireland, living in Halifax, identified as a shoemaker journeyman. He married Rose Hagar in 1873. They had 4 children, son name Thomas. In 1891. he was still a shoemaker. He died between 1891-1901.
