Searching for Cahill ancestors and descendants. The majority of my DNA matches seem to be in the Roscommon area, so I am hoping to connect with Cahill's in that area that might be able to help me identify my 4th Great-Grandfather's family.

My 4th great-grandfather, John Cahill, was born in Ireland about 1750 - 1760. We do not know his exact birthdate or location. He immigrated to the USA, date unknown, and died in Virginia in 1817.

The first documented mention of John Cahill was in Virginia in 1775, when he was awarded a contract to paint the county courthouse, along with a George Hairston.

He settled in Reed Creek, Virginia and married Dianah Garner in 1789. They had 10 children, in the following order: Nancy, Edward Peregrine, Thomas, John, Susannah, Mary (Polly), Nathaniel, Dianah, Maria and Sallie. I descend from Thomas Cahill on my mother's side. My grandmother was Annie Mae Cahill.

You have posted in a number of parishes and all messages end up on our main message board. I plan to delete most of the messages to so we don't have a lot of unanswered messages.

The surname Cahill in the mid-19th century was a very common surname found in every county with Kilkenny, Cork and Tipperary having the msot Cahill households.

Unfortunately, very few Roman Catholic parishes in Ireland have records back to the 1700s. There are two parishes in Co. Roscommon that have records back to the late 1700s-- Athlone goes back to 1789 and Boyle 1793.

I checked on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the earliest John Cahill baptismal record in Co. Roscommon was in 1820.

The Tithe listings from the 1820s/1830s in Co. Roscommon show Cahill records in five different parishes but the Tithe listings are incomplete so more Cahills were likely living in other parishes.

Hopefully, you will get more Cahill DNA matches which might help pinpoint the parish within Roscommon.

Sorry, we could not be more helpful but Church records are not available back to 1850-1860.

Let me know if you have questions.

No problem. I don't think our instructions are clear on that point. Sorry we could not be more helpful with John Cahill.
