I am trying to trace the ancestors of John Gibb who was born in ULster in 1837.

By 1861 he was living in Port Glasgow and married to Janet Maxwell.

 

He was working as a Shipwright and died in Scotland some time after 1901.

I have noe details of his parents or where he was born

    I think you should get the copy of the certificate, it should tell you who his parents are & where he was born.  I have found that Scotlandspeople.gov.uk (fee based) is an excellent site, I have got marraige certs from that site & also there are census records & if you follow every one of these you may be luck to find the county that he was born in.  My ancestors lived in Scotland & they put Co. Monaghan & Co Cavan in their Census records as their place of origin.
