  • As already noted, there seems to be no official explanation of the name at the usual places, such as logainm.ie

However, the Irish form of the name, Méanas, gives some indication of what the original meaning may have been.  In place names, the word méan can mean "mouth" (as opposed to the word meán, which would refer to the middlee of something).  The townland is close to the River Laune (in Irish, An Leamhain), and Google Maps and Google Earth show a small stream entering the Laune at or very close to the townland, so perhaps the mouth of that stream was the source of the tonwland name.

  • Hi,  also when used as a prefix mean = middle and as = out
The Meanus in Limerick that used to go to was "out in the middle of feilds"  a long way from the nearest town.
Now it has been built up quite a bit.
    Still a lovely area.
